- In the temperature range from -5 °C to -20 °C you are expected to wear a thin “1st layer” that is normally a set of thin, long woollen underwear and a hat (especially if you have no or short hair).
- When it is colder than -20 °C you will normally use a thin 1st layer and in addition a 2nd layer on your upper body and a hat.
- Women should add 4-5 °C to the comfort temperature in outside temperatures down to -15 °C.
- Women should add 8-10 °C to the comfort temperature in outside temperatures below -20 °C.

Why synthetic over down?
- If your not carrying it then weight is not a problem.

- Also they are an excellent price for the temperature rating your getting.

Sleeping Hints and Tips
- Sleeping bags should be used with a liner it adds some warmth and keeps it clean.
- Sleeping bag liners add between 2C &6C to a sleeping bags temperature rating.
- If your very short try and fill the dead spaces in your sleeping bag with clothing as your body heat will be wasted trying to heat air spaces, or fold it over or tie it off at the bottom with a belt etc.
- If your female, low body fat, slim, slight build you are already going to feel the cold more so consider choosing a sleeping bag which is warmer than the temperature quoted in your kit/trip list.
- Sleeping bags only conserve existing body heat so go to bed cold, remain cold.
- If you have cold or damp clothing on when you get into your sleeping bag your going to remain cold. Try and wear base layers you haven't been sweating into when you go to bed. Try and have a wet and dry kit routine, you will dry your damp kit off when working hard in the day. Wear your dry kit at night to get a good nights sleep.
- Jog on spot to keep warm prior to going to bed or a few press ups but not enough to start sweating. This heat is needed to heat your sleeping bag up and for it to keep in the bag all night.
- Eat a hot meal/drink prior to going to bed, and stay hydrated.
- A wet down sleeping bag will not dry out, and needs to be kept in a roll top dry bag we have quite a few for hire.
- In permanent sub zero temperatures getting your sleeping bag wet can be life threatening!
- All duffel bags even the Mountain Equipment wet/dry bag are not waterproof, unless they have the drysuit style diving zips.
- Give your sleeping bag time to loft and give it a shake.
- All clothes and sleeping bags need to be kept in roll top drybags Ortlied/Exped all available for hire.
- Plastic bags puncture and tear easily and also have a huge hole called the entrance which water can get into.
- As with down sleeping bags down jackets need to be kept dry.
- Do not ever wash your down items before posting back this must be done professionally by us.
- Do not pack sharp pointy items such as crampons on top of sleeping bags etc.
- Understand you body and how you feel when camping outdoors i.e. are you a cold sleeper get some practice in.
- Do not stand around chatting to fellow campers getting freezing cold, then think ooh I'll just get into my -40C sleeping bag and all will be fine. It won't, the laws of physics apply, there is no central heating, if you are already cold where will the heat come from for the bag to retain?
Tundra Sleeping Bags Ethical Statement which we totally agree with.
- Factory employees should have good working conditions judged by western standards.
- We should use the best possible design and materials available.
- The collection of the down should be as compassionate and humane as possible.
They have made Down products in Poland for many generations and we wanted to harness those traditional skills. We use modern computerised down filling machines for accuracy combined with traditional hand skills of the experienced technicians. This Polish Heritage means we make a better product with a lower impact on the environment.
We use only the very best down (FP880+ euro) which comes from farms where the geese and ducks swim on ponds and rivers living in their natural habitat.
These birds are kept for breeding and live to an old age. Wherever possible the down is taken from the nest of these birds. The down collected from the nests of these mature birds ensures high quality down and the compassionate treatment of the birds. Mature birds produce a higher fill power (FP880+) down than birds that are killed as part of the food chain. These poor birds only survive in the food chain for a matter of months, never maturing and their down has a low filler power (c.FP450). We use euro Fill Power measurements which generally is 10% lower than US standards. For example 1000 US = 900 Euro approximately for the same quality down.
Living in natural settings allows these mature birds to develop superior quality down clusters to protect them from the harsh and hostile winter weather. The down clusters from the breast of the bird takes three-four years to fully develop. Down from birds used in the food chain and killed at around four weeks is not fully developed and therefore, clearly, cannot achieve a high fill power.
Wherever possible the down is taken from the nests when the birds have naturally moulted, our down is carefully sorted and processed, washed and sterilised. Thanks to special procedures, the naturally occurring oil is also retained which helps to protect the down from moisture.
